Young Women of Distinction is a public benefit organization founded by Stefanie Magness in 2008 in response to the overwhelming increase of statistics showing the rapid decline of self-esteem in young women.  In addition,  girls of color in the 21st century are faced with negative media images, poverty, low self-esteem, teen pregnancy, and lack of programs designed just for them. The focus of this organization is to facilitate the development of goal oriented and conscientious girls.   We aim to teach girls to have an unshakeable sense of self worth, while building an educational, social, and cultural foundation necessary for survival. These girls will grow to influence positive social change by following the example of women who have built the bridges for them to cross.

Our Mission

YWD’s mission is to combine the spirit of the civil and women’s rights movement in order to provide a foundation of courage, strength, and dignity in young women of color.

What We Do

The Young Women of Distinction empowers girls to be independent thinkers.  We provide many resources to help girls to make changes in their own communities, schools, and homes.  We invite you to see these resources and join us in creating an environment in which girls can gain courage, strength, and dignity. Our programs include workshops, retreats, conferences, and a birthday club.

Afro Puffs and Ponytails is constantly searching for information about camps, clubs and organizations, and mentoring programs to provide as resources for parents and community organizers. It is our hopes that each resource provided will serve to build confidence, enhance self esteem, develop leadership skills, empower, uplift and educate our African American girls. We are not recommending these programs, but offering a starting point for you to conduct your own evaluation and research about whether a program is right for your child.
