Jasmine Alexis – District of Columbia
Afro Puffs and Ponytails present Jasmine Alexis, Miss Teen District of Columbia 2008, as our newest High Achiever.
Jasmine Alexis, Miss Teen District of Columbia 2008 is an eighteen year old senior and honor roll student attending Keystone National High School. A member of the National Society of High School Scholars, winner of a National English Merit Award and invitee of the 2008 Presidential Youth Leadership Conference and 2008 United States Scholar-Athlete Games, Jasmine has studied abroad in Europe as a member of the Lead America Youth Leadership Conference.
Passionate about her platform of “Promoting Internet Safety Among Youth”, Jasmine believes that no one single solution exists to protect kids on the internet. Rather, protection often rests on social and educational strategies as well as public policy to teach youth responsible and safe cyber surfing.
Jasmine is a member of Teen Angels, an organization of 13 -18 year old volunteers trained by leading safety experts on internet privacy, safety and security. Teen Angels coordinates programs in schools, community centers and churches to educate both youth and adults about responsible and safe online surfing. “One of the most important ways to keep teens safe online is to teach them to make wise decisions about the content they view and the types of internet activities in which they are involved.”
Because the internet is universally accessible, Teen Angels can be found globally with chapters in the United Kingdom and Singapore, with more chapters forming across the world.
A talented and accomplished dancer, Miss Alexis has won many first place awards in International Latin Ballroom Dancing, including the 2006, 2007, 2008 Philadelphia Dancesports Championships, 2007 New Jersey Dancesports Classic, 2007 Atlantic Ballroom Competition, 2008 Maryland Dancesport Championships, 2008 Virginia Dancesport Championship and the 2008 Capitol Dancesport Classic. Jasmine has also served as a member of several local performing dance groups such as Future Shock, the Washington Wizards Jr. Dance Team and the Washington Redskins All-Star Dance Team.
On August 16, 2008 Jasmine represented the District of Columbia in Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant where she finished as a national semi-finalist by placing in the Top Ten. As a result of her outstanding performance, Jasmine will receive over $4000.00 in scholarship monies toward her college education.
Her volunteer and community service work includes the Help the Homeless Walk-A-Thon, Ronald McDonald House, Covenant House, the Washington Home, Children’s Hospital “Queen for a Day”, Hoop Dreams, Veterans Bingo Night, DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, USO, Walter Reed, Greater Washington Urban League, Project Giveback, and Redskins Toys for Tots.
Congratulations Jasmine!
