Shaunè Hawkins Langston – Attorney & Counselor at Law
Afro Puffs and Ponytails present Mrs. Shaunè Hawkins Langston, a wife, mother of three, sister, daughter and an attorney who will be opening her own firm, The Langston Law Firm, on June 1, 2009.
In her own words, this is her story:
I grew up in Charlotte, NC and I always had a gift for reading and writing (note, I wasn’t too comfortable with math though). When I graduated from high school, I went to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I excelled in college and graduated in May, 1999, with honors – magna cum laude (GPA of 3.80/4.00) with a double major in psychology and political science, and a minor in philosophy. I was also elected to be a member of Phi Beta Kappa – a very prestigious, honorary, academic fraternity.
I then went on to law school. Although I worked hard and studied hard and I was striving for Harvard or Yale, I was blessed to get accepted into one of the top 10 law schools in the country, Northwestern University School of Law, and I graduated in 2003. At Northwestern, I made the dean’s list and gained an excellent education and some life-long friends and mentors.
As of now, I am licensed to practice law in Indiana, Virginia and the District of Columbia and I have been an attorney with large and international law firms for the past six years.
During my years in large law firms, I have learned how to litigate (what Johnny Cochran used to do); to do regulatory compliance work (environmental law); and to close major, multi-million (and some billion) dollar real estate and corporate transactions. During my years in large law firms I have also had to deal with underlying racism and unequal treatment due to my race and due to my having a family. Although I have faced racism and unequal treatment, I always remembered the following facts: I know who I am and I know that I can achieve anything, and excel at anything to which I put my mind.
I want you young ladies to understand that you can do the same. Never let anyone stop you from being the beautiful young ladies that you are. What you think of yourself, is the only opinion that matters.
Now, I am going to put my legal expertise to use in my own firm to help every day people. I have the confidence of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to lead and strengthen me as I take on this new challenge. I’m excited about my future.
My advice to young women: Please, always be true to yourself. Never doubt what you can do and never be afraid to try something new. If you believe in yourself, learn and study as much as you can, and always pray to the Lord for His help and His guidance, there is nothing you can not accomplish.
Don’t listen to haters (even if they are in your own family).
Define yourself. Don’t let anyone else tell you who you are or what you can or can not do.
Know that you are beautiful, smart, and that you are a winner – and you do not have to be perfect; just always do your best. We all have different gifts – your job is to find out what your gifts and interests are and to develop those gifts and interests to be the best you that you can be.
Finally, follow your heart and do what you know is right for you and your community-no matter what. If you do that, you will always come out the winner.
Young ladies, please look to Afro Puffs and Ponytails to always be reminded of these facts!

Thank you for posting your story, and words of encouragement for our girls. I’m the founder of G.E.M.S. (Girls Empowered by Morals and Standards), and enrichment group for girls. I’m going to have my girls read your story during one of our upcoming meetings. I know that it will be very inspirational to them. You’re such a wonderful role model. Thanks for sharing!
