GirlTrek is a national non-profit health movement aimed at inspiring young girls of color, whose communities are most at-risk, to live healthier and more fulfilled lives.  The founders of GirlTrek are Vannessa Garrison and T. Morgan Dixon.

GirlTrek leads regional Trek Teams.  They invite middle school girls and the women they look up to – their mothers, grandmothers, big sisters, aunts, neighbors, teachers, church and community leaders – to go on a series of heart-pumping day hikes along beautiful wooded trails, across awe-inspiring college campuses and through the streets of their own neighborhoods!

Each summer, GirlTrek invites high school girls from across the country to the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  Over the course of two weeks, the girls plan and lead a once-in-a-lifetime hiking experience along the actual Underground Railroad.   The Eastern Shore has unparalleled historic sites and breathtaking landscape which makes for an experiential education like no other.  The region remains virtually untouched since Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and a host of extraordinary people took courageous steps to change the course of America.  FreedomTrek takes place on a college campus and includes health education and leadership training.

Afro Puffs and Ponytails is continously searching for information about camps, clubs and organizations, and mentoring programs to provide as resources for parents and community organizers. It is our hopes that each resource provided will serve to build confidence, enhance self esteem, develop leadership skills, empower, uplift and educate our African American girls. We are not recommending these programs, but offering a starting point for you to conduct your own evaluation and research about whether a program is right for your child.
