Afro Puffs and Ponytails is striving to bring to the forefront organizations and clubs that are geared towards promoting, empowering, and changing the lives of girls for the better. This week’s organization is Harriet’s Girls Inc.
Harriet’s Girls Inc., based in Riverdale, Maryland was founded in November 2006 by Riverdale resident JoKeeta Joyner. Harriet’s Girls Inc. is an organization that focuses on empowering girls across all economic levels. The organization provides enrichment classes, scholarships, workshops, and missionary assignments to allow the girls to blossom, while assisting those who are less fortunate. Middle school and high school students from diverse backgrounds work together to learn that everyone has gifts to share with others. This gap bridging measure forms natural bonds between girls from different backgrounds, allowing the youth to understand and appreciate diversity.
Harriet’s Girls Inc. are award winners of the 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation of Prince George’s County. For the past two years, the girls fed the homeless in McPherson Square on Thanksgiving morning in Washington, DC and they fed the homeless for the Prince George’s County “Warm Nights” program. The members participated in sewing, decoupage, dance, and ceramic enrichment programs, visited the Holocaust and Native American museums, studied Apartheid and the genocide that occurred in Rwanda, participated walks for “Relay for Life”, “National Make a Difference Day”, “Maryland Emancipation Day”, and “National Walk for Epilepsy”, hosted an “Empty Bowls” fundraiser, and had a successful summer working hard on the 2007 mission trip in the Dominican Republic. Christmas 2007, the girls adopted 20 families from four schools in Prince Georges County, providing them with food, clothing, and toys. The girls will take off on another life changing journey, when they travel to Trinidad in June 2009 for their annual international mission trip.
Afro Puffs and Ponytails is constantly searching for information about camps, clubs and organizations, and mentoring programs to provide as resources for parents and community organizers. It is our hopes that each resource provided will serve to build confidence, enhance self esteem, develop leadership skills, empower, uplift and educate our African American girls. We are not recommending these programs, but offering a starting point for you to conduct your own evaluation and research about whether a program is right for your child.
