It is our hopes that each resource provided will serve to build confidence, enhance self esteem, instill leadership skills, empower, uplift and educate our African American girls. I have a daughter she is 7 years old and in first grade. i recieved a letter form the school yesterday that stated that my child had been weight, and that they had taken her height and body mass index. Now my daughter is 46.75 inches tall and weight is 63 lbs. and the bmi was 20.27. and they sent a letter home telling me she was 95.84 bmi to age percentile and that she had excess weight associated with health risk, and that the did this to according to state law. What has got me upset is that they are doing this in the schools, girls have enough issues with apperiance that lead to anorexia, bulimia, depression, and so forth. that they should not be doing this in the schools. I promote the education of health living, how to eat a healthy diet, exercise, and so on. but to have these first graders sitting in a line to be weight in front of other students, and lets face it kids can be quite mean. society has such a one tracked mind on how people should look on tv in every option of entertainment, that has a lot of young girls and women doing things to there body to maintain an image that is unhealthy, and if they dont comform to that ideal there treated as less then and discriminated against. Now there anouncing in the schools through goverment law the same thing. girls have enough problems with self esteem. Now the schools have been teaching healthing eating and exercise, but to this is to far… how can we stop this from happening???
