Steppin’ To The Future
A little while back, I attended an event here in my city that left me quite proud of our young men and young ladies, especially our young ladies. I was pleasantly surprised all the way around.
I took my daughter, her friend, and the friend’s sister to a Step Show, hosted by my daughter’s Language teacher and sponsored by several local leaders. Now, the step show didn’t feature any established Greek organizations. Actually, local leaders from these fraternities and sororities have taken young people from our schools under their collective wing, and have established for them step groups akin to fraternities and sororities. The kids have seriously taken to it, and it was evident in their performance.
The show featured four male groups and four female groups on the junior high/high school level, and one male and two female groups in the ‘junior’ and ‘baby’ division. The hard work and dedication that has been put into these groups was definitely reflected in their routines. All groups performed well, with excellent precision and timing. The crowd did a wonderful job of encouraging these kids with their enthusiastic applause and shouts of praise. And everyone’s behavior, performers and spectators, was very good. There were no bad feelings shown during the performance, no fights of any kind. It was a commendable event. But I really want to speak about our young ladies.
One thing that has been often said about African-American women and girls is that you can’t get too many of them together in one place at one time, because they are so evil and jealous there will almost always be a fight. Well, I saw no evidence of that last night. Our girls were amazing in their performance, and even more amazing in their leadership. They assisted the younger girls in their performance, as well as supervised them during the rest of the show, keeping them together and in order. You clearly saw that they enjoyed what they were doing, and at the same time, took their roles seriously. They are to be celebrated for their great job.
There will be more on these groups in the future, but what I want to say to our young ladies everywhere, is that you have in you the potential and the ability to be and do anything you want to do. And we adults are here to help you reach your goals. If you have an idea of something you want to do, talk to us about it. Anything good you want to do, we will be happy to help you do it. You are our shining stars, and we want to help you shine as brightly as you can.
